Myconnect is a bio-art project, electronically connecting human beings and other species – in this case the wonderful fungus mycelium. The nervous system of a human is integrated with a mycelium sample, by creating a feedback loop formed of the human heartbeat and the mycelium’s electrical pulses. The mycelium’s pulse is transferred back to the human body via sound, light and tactile sensory impulses, and responds in turn to the human’s responses – and so on, and so on.
The project’s intention is a reminder that “transferred sensory experience indicates the notion of the dependence of perceivable reality on the sensory impulses in the environment. Such symbiotic link points out to the integration of human being in the multichannel network of his or her or its habitat.”
Or put more simply – that all life is connected.
Or, as Alan Watts puts it “You and I are all as much continuous with the physical universe as a wave is continuous with the ocean.”
Myconnect was created by Saša Spačal, dr. Mirjan Švagelj and Anil Podgornik.
